Earl Grey tea is potpourri of black tea, blended from dissimilar cultivators. The flavor of Earl Grey is sweeter than that of frequent back tea because of the addition of a sure ingredient – bergamot oil! Bergamot is a little and sour assortment of orange-like citrus fruit. It is native to Asia, and was ordinarily added to foods for it is strong and citrus flavor. When the peel or rind of the bergamot orange is pressed, the resulting oil is oftentimes applied in cooking. Was there a real Earl, and did he develop this version of tea? Yes, there was an Earl Grey, but, no, he didn’t develop the drink. He was Charles Grey, the Second Earl Grey, and he was the Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1830 to 1834. It isn’t known how he came by the recipe for this tea, which he gave to the owners of the Jacksons of Piccadilly tea company in 1830. It is closely sure that Chinese diplomats sent the recipe to Grey as a gift after he won the position of Prime Minister. A tall tale arose around the recipe, which was said to be a present from a thankful Chinese mandarin, whose son was rescued from drowning in a river by the Earl himself (or one of his men). This would have been an extraordinary feat, because the Earl never traveled to China allround his life. The tinting of tea with fruit flavors was mutual in China, but the distinctive strength of bergamot oil was perfective for the rosy sweetness of black tea. The brand took off and became one of the most frequent in the tea-loving British Empire. Today most of the bergamot oil employed in this tea is cultivated in Calabria, Italy, where it is likewise employed by perfumers! The skillfulness of bergamot flavoring in this tea may be seen in the special brew called London Fog tea. By adding a heavy dose of steamed milk tothis tea and sweetening it with a drop or two of vanilla, you get a fantasti and wakeful beverage that is in all probability the best blend of dairy and citrus flavors in the world, eclipsed by the rosy flavor of black tea in the foreground. In fact, the use of bergamot has dramatically increased in a great deal of dissimilar teas, as respective American markets have become open to new feed products. Today the label “Earl Grey tea” have a tendancy to indicate the presence of bergamot rather than the blending of Chinese black teas. Jacksons of Picadilly has always insisted that the truest Earl Grey tea has been their own product since they received the recipe in 1830, and that it has been a continuous vendor since that date. They likewise assert that even though the tea is a blend, it is composed wholly of Chinese leaves. In 1985, the recipe for the blend was sold with the Jacksons of Picadilly business to the British feed conglomerate, Fitch Lovell. Fitch took especial care to ascertain the British public that the mystery recipe would stay a national treasure, and today Earl Grey tea is more general than ever! Even a few minutes too long results in a bitter, bitter tea, reminiscent of orange pekoe with a strong perfume added. What a letdown! Even properly brewed, though, this tea cannot, in my opinion, warrant more than three stars. The ingredients in Earl Grey are just black teas and bergamot essence. Note that Earl Grey does contain caffeine. Tazo is an interesting company that makes only super premium teas. They are socially responsible, based in Portland, and have the motto, “The Reincarnation of Tea”. Tazo is owned by Starbucks. Their web site is fun and quirky, with a Zen-type focus, definitely worth checking out. It is unclear, though, from their web site, how many of their ingredients are organic or kosher, and they do use some “natural flavors” in their teas–this wording seems a little vague for a super premium tea. Instead of Tazo’s Earl Grey, I would highly recommend Numi Earl Grey, which does not disappoint in any way and is comparable in cost.
